Data Benchmarking: Metrics to Measure SEO Performance

Track and measure key performance indicators (KPIs) that can help you evaluate the effectiveness of your SEO campaigns.

What are SEO Benchmarks?

Benchmarks are key performance indicators (KPIs) that measure how well your website is performing and use them as my reference point when building an SEO strategy. Organic site visitors are an example of KPI. With this, I can use the organic traffic result of the previous month as a benchmark.

The Importance of SEO Benchmarks

Benchmarking is important because it allows you to see how any performance indicator changes over time. SEO benchmarks give us the before-and-after picture for a particular KPI. This allows us to monitor the effectiveness of our SEO campaign and, if necessary, make any adjustments to our plan.

Traffic and User Experience Benchmarks

Getting visitors to your website is just one aspect. If a user of the website has a negative experience, they are probably going to leave and never come back. For this reason, we aim to create goals for both traffic volume and user experience.

Organic Search Traffic

This metric shows the number of users who visit your website via organic or unpaid listings on search engines like Google and Bing.

Engaged Sessions

A session that must last longer than 10 seconds, have numerous screen or page visits, or result in a transaction in order to be considered “engaged”.

Average Engagement Time

Low engagement rates are not necessarily a bad thing. It could simply signify that the visitor received their needs quickly.
